Awards and Accolades
In the last few weeks we have been showered with awards and accolades!Over the summer, our 3D film at the Roman Army Museum, ‘Edge of Empire – the Eagle’s Eye’ was awarded the Silver Screen Award at the 2011 US International Film and Video Awards. A great accolade - there were several hundred applicants from all over the world. At the end of September Lonely Planet published its ‘1000 Ultimate Sights’ which contains 100 categories with their top < the world for each category listed – we were ecstatic to find that Vindolanda, the only UK site, has been listed in the ‘Greatest Roman Sights’ section along with Pompeii and the Forum in Rome. The first week in October saw us attending the Awards Dinner for the North East Tourism Awards at the Stadium of Light. Our combined entry for Roman Vindolanda and the was shortlisted in the Large Tourist Attraction of the Year category. We were delighted to be awarded the Silver Award with the Gold Award going to Beamish and the Bronze to The Baltic. It was a great celebration of tourism in the North East of England and we are very proud to have been presented with our Silver Award. In early November we will discover the results of the British Guild of Travel Writers Awards. Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum were nominated for an award by Guild member Gillian Thornton who presented to their AGM which then voted to produce the shortlist; this is then circulated to all Guild members who vote for the winner which will be announced at their Annual Dinner at the Savoy in London in early November. We are keeping our fingers crossed and are very grateful to Gillian for nominating us and are very pleased to have been shortlisted.2011 ExcavationsThe 2011 Excavation season came to a close on Friday 16th September and there is now a full account of all of the work undertaken this year on our website – Click her to find out more
